Prescott declares November 28th Native American Heritage DayThe day after Thanksgiving is usually a tribute to commerce as thousands flock to malls to jump-start their holiday shopping. This year Friday will have a different focus, to recognize the important contributions Native Americans have made to the fabric of our society.

Passed into law in October, the Native American Heritage Day 2008 Bill encourages the observation of November 28th, 2008 as "Native American Heritage Day."

The City of Prescott issued its own proclamation at yesterday's City Council meeting. Mr. Ernie Jones, President of the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe, and several Native American representatives were in attendance as Mayor Jack Wilson read the proclamation declaring November 28th as "Native American Heritage Day" in Prescott.

The proclamation recognized Native Americans for their important contributions to the political, culture, and economic life of the United States. Noting that over twenty North American Tribes are represented in the Prescott Unified School District, the statement echoed the sentiment of the Senate Bill encouraging local schools to provide students classroom instruction focusing on the contributions and achievement of Native Americans.

Ernie Jones thanked the Mayor and Council on behalf of the Yavapai and other local Indian tribes.

In honor of the proclamation, photographer Bruce Roscoe donated an image entitled "One With the Native Spirit" to the City of Prescott (see gallery below).
