Packing an entire alphabet of fun for the entire family, the Tony Award-winning Broadway comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee comes to Prescott's Yavapai College Performance Hall December 11, 2008 at 8:00 p.m.
The popular musical tells the story of six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by adults who’ve barely managed to escape childhood, as they learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.
The show’s Tony Award-winning team has created a hit musical that features the unlikeliest of heroes – a quirky, charming cast of outsiders for whom the spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.
Before each performance, several audience members are recruited to participate on-stage as guest spellers, making every performance unique and opening the door to hilarious improvisation by the cast. At this performance, local radio celebrity Ken Byers from KPPV's 106.7 FM "The Mix" will be one of the guest spelling bee contestants.
Putnam County was hailed as "that rarity of rarities, a super-smart show that is also a crowd-pleaser. It’s the best new musical I’ve covered,” by Terry Teachout of The Wall Street Journal.
Before starting the nationwide tour that brings it to Prescott, the show broke box office records during it's off-Broadway run, racking up two Tony wins for Best Book of a Musical and Best Actor in 2005.
Putnam County is presented by Yavapai College Community Events and co-sponsored by CableOne and the Performing Arts Charitable Endowment (PACE).
